Spring 2012 Trends | Part 1: The Peplum
12:43 AM
Lady Khadija
Part of the reason I started Empress Style is because I just got tired of other people trying to tell me what's hot and not. What rules in the fashion industry has little place in the world of style. Trends come and go but style is forever. Stylish people make their own rules and set the trends. They don't follow them.
Keeping that in mind, I thought it would be good to give my dig on the latest trends. I'm gonna do this in parts and on the trends that caught my attention. I'll share with you my own opinion and show you some examples and a few reasons you might add (or drop) these trends from your wardrobe. *Note: I used the word opinion, because if you're reading this you got your own distinct style and you're gonna wear what you wanna.
So Let's get started:
The Peplum:
First off, I'm not too big on anything that get is name from the Romans, but I'll do my best to be objective here. The term, as used in fashion, dates back to the 19th century and was an extra over skirt. It became popular in the 1940s and is back with a vengeance in Spring and Fall fashion trends.
Tops and Jackets
I'll be honest. I love a peplum top. As long as you have the right size, you can find one to flatter most any figure. In the carousel above, there are some examples. For a boxy figure, they add curves at the hip and draw attention to the waist. They accentuate and hourglass figure very well. If you have wide hips and skinny legs you might consider pairing it a with a wide leg pant. For a short torso, pick a drop waist, for a long torso, a high-waisted peplum top works better. If you have a bit of belly you want to hide, be sure to get a loose fit.
Skirts and Dresses
The great thing about the peplum dress is that it allows you to create a specific silhouette, but make sure you picking the right one. The skirt and dress are not for everyone. My advice is to be cautious before you step out in one of these. They can hide some of the parts of your body you may be unhappy with and create curves in the hip. But if you already have a curvy figure you would do good not to pick a peplum with a wide flare. Also, pay attention to the cut of the skirt. Balance is key.
